1971Joseph Sassoon: Dip. Ed Dissertation

Joseph Sassoon in: Reading Difficulties In Older Children: A Case Study Of Four boys in a Private Progressive School: Dissertation for Diploma In Education.

This 24 page academic dissertation focusses on the application of four tests commonly used by educational psychologists in assessing a child’s understanding and approach to language and reading: W.I.S.C., Neale Analysis, Schonell, and Bender.

Although the paper is comprehensive in detail it provides little understanding of the school’s approach to reading. Indeed, I think John Aitkenhead’s understanding of individual children would have resulted in similar observations to those outcomes from quite time-consuming and potentially anxiety provoking test situations.

This academic exercise was, like many other visiting academics, an exercise in putting the school and its participants into the ‘goldfish bowl’ which resulted in benefits to the observers and probably of little benefit to the children. These visitors were often perceived as intruders and intrusions.
