1998: The Scottish Review: School’s Out:

Learning in Freedom by John Aitkenhead

In 1998, two years before John died, he was asked to contribute this article to The Scottish Review summer 1998 publication focussing on education. John’s article was the sixth in a sequence entitled School’s Out: The State of Scottish Education.

I am posting this article in August 2024 when wars and unrest are occurring across the globe from Russia and Ukraine to the Middle East of Israel, Lebanon and Palestine. Where famine and inequality are increasing, where racism and prejudice of many kinds are commonplace, John’s observation of the prospect of a third world war, a nuclear war, seems apposite.
