1967: Queen of the South Football Club
Being a small school opportunities for serious football training and matches were slight
John endeavoured on occasion to make links with Queens so that the most able and keen footballing kids might get an opportunity for proper training.
This first letter, I believe, is from John Rafferty, a name referenced in the second letter from John Husband, the then manager of Queens.
I’m not exactly sure which boys went to train at Palmerston, Queens ground. I think it likely that Gavin Aitkenhead, Sean Cuddihy and Steve Winning would have been keen. Gavin went on, after leaving Kilquhanity to work in Glasgow where he trained with Glasgow Rangers and was given a trial by them.
When I was a kid at Kilquhanity we had a few football matches against Warriston School in Moffat. Warriston School was a private preparatory school for boys.
There were also some games against the student gardeners from Threave Gardening School in Castle Douglas. I do not remember ever winning any of these matches! Kilquhanity’s eleven would consist of kids of all ages as never an eleven of similar age!
In other years before, during and after my time some individual kids would play for Threave Rovers (Castle Douglas) and some of the village teams around Galloway.
