1968 Sean Cuddihy: Beyond Kilquhanity

Whilst still a pupil at Kilquhanity Sean was eligible to be called-up by the USA military to serve in Vietnam. Both Sean’s family and John wanted to do everything in their power to prevent this.

My understanding, being a pupil at Kilquhanity at the same time as he was, Sean was allowed an extended time as a pupil to delay call-up. Later in 1968,the possibility of Naturalisation as a British citizen was explored.

Donald Mackenzie with whom Sean and his brother Bob had stayed in Edinburgh once again wrote to John on 11th February 1969.

Sean stayed in Scotland for a few more years unsure as to how to proceed with his life. He wrote two letters to John, undated.

Sean did return to the USA where he wrote once again to John about ex-Kilquhanity pupils he had met or stayed with: Greta Dunn – one of Sean’s many girlfriends; Lundie Guerard; Lil and Clark Natwick – ex-staff members. I think this letter, although undated, was written fairly soon after Sean left Kilquhanity and before he left Scotland for the last time.

To my knowledge Sean has remained living in the USA. He visited Kilquhanity, I think at the time of the Jubilee. If memory serves, I think he said he was doing trades work – painting and decorating but maybe memory plays tricks.

Sean it would be good to hear your news and maybe one day you will return to your second home – Scotland.
