1982: Max Paterson: Head of Wellington School
"Dangerously radical" policies
Having trained as a clinical psychologist, Max Paterson became an influential figure in the development of children’s services in Scotland. In 1962 along with others, he developed a psychological service for the List D (Approved) schools.
He was involved with the introduction of the Children’s Hearing system in Scotland and worked in Loaningdale School alongside John Wilson, a friend of John and Morag and former teacher at Kilquhanity. He was a founder member of the Scottish Institute of Human Relations.
In 1973 Max went on to become Head of Wellington School. According to an obituary published in the Scotsman newspaper on the 22md March 2006, his appointment was not renewed in 1975 despite the fact that many of the "dangerously radical" policies he introduced eventually became common practice in residential care.
The letter below from Max to John reflects his continuing to work in the best interests of children with learning difficulties.
