1990: Jubilee Celebrations: The Gathering

Held in the school grounds for 5 days - August 20th to 24th 1990

The “Gathering” was organised to celebrate the 50 years since the opening and continuing existence of Kilquhanity School. A number of ‘events’ were scheduled, some formally, such as the cycle race and the rounders match, which are dealt with in separate articles, and others less formally, as regards timing.

Later in the week a very large marquee was erected for the Banquet and the Ceilidh – memory serves that the Ceilidh Band Two Left Feet performed.

This allowed many of us to relive those twice termly parties and dances in the Stable from our own time at Killy. Speeches were made alongside health and safety advice regarding preference for folk not to smoke in the marquee!

The art room had been laid out with a mass of photographs, children’s artwork and ‘merchandise’ in the form of T-shirts, brass table coasters, photos all for sale.

I remember Jem Cox spending countless hours with the carcass of a sheep slowly roasting over a wood fire preparing the meat for the banquet.

A film of the week was made, including, a rounders match, cycling, a banquet  as well as a Bar and general socialising. Claire Cameron had already made herself as useful as ever by producing "A GUIDE TO KNOW WHO YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE THIS WEEK identifying everybody who had written to her letting her know if and when they would attemd the "Gathering." And there were many.

The finale was the most splendid firework display from ex-pupil, Chris Mayer who had, I understand, made the fireworks himself. The display would match anything put on by a local council event. Magnificent!
